Pentagon Investigation Finds Hegseth Placed Troops in Jeopardy with Messaging App Conversation.

A long-awaited Department of Defense review has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth breached departmental policies by sharing secret information in a private Signal group, as stated by a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Incident

The chat group in dispute included particulars about a planned air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi militants. This chat came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other officials in the chat reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the actions of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not authorized for handling classified information.

Serious Threat to Forces

The internal investigation found that the intelligence shared by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the safety of US service members if it had been obtained by a hostile nation.

Notably, the report acknowledged that Hegseth had the ability to downgrade the information he shared, though it was unclear whether he actually did so.

Hegseth's Reaction

The source said that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth claimed he only shared information that would not have endangered personnel or jeopardized the mission. He further stated that he possessed the authority to downgrade information and viewed the investigation to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been provided to Congress. An unclassified version is anticipated to be made public later this week.
