Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, after Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
